Description
Located in central South Dakota, along the Missouri River across from Pierre; County Seat: Fort Pierre.
History
Created in 1873, organized in 1890 and named for Brigadier General David S Stanley (born 1829), who commanded Fort Sully, across the Missouri River from Stanley County. He served in the military during the Civil War. (SD-T17/p33)
