Description
Located in central South Dakota, 72 km (45 mi) north-northeast of Pierre; County Seat: Gettysburg.
History
Created in 1875 and organized in 1883; originally named Ashmore County in honor of Samuel Ashmore of Elk Point who served in the Territorial Legislature in 1872-73. The name was changed to Potter County in 1877 for Dr Joel A Potter, a memberof the Legislature that year. (SD-T17/p32)
