Description

Located in eastern South Dakota along the boundary with Minnesota, 129 km (80 mi) north of the City of Sioux Falls; County Seat: Clear Lake.

History

Created in 1862, organized in 1878, and named for Jacob S Deuel, who operated a sawmill in 1860 when South Dakota was known as the Dakota Territory. Mr Deuel became a member of the first Territorial Legislature in 1862, the same year the county was created. Deuel County in Nebraska is also named for Jacob Deuel. (SD-T17/p24)
