Description
Located in central South Dakota, 109 km (68 mi) southeast of Pierre; County Seat: Chamberlain.
History
Created and organized in 1875, and named for the Brule Tribe of the Sioux Indians who lived in the vicinity before white settlement moved to the area. The word "Brule" is French for "burned" and reportedly refers to an incident involving a group of Sioux Indians who fought savagely with a tribe of Pawnee Indians and were caught in a flaming trap where some died and those that survived were severly injured.
