History
The name recognizes the pronghorn deer that gather near the reservoir. Presumed to have been named originally for Charlie Smith, a local hunter who was reportedly lost on the nearby butte. The variant name Lake Pons presumably derives from that of Henry Pon, who acting in his role of representative of the Harney County Investment Company, submitted the name on the December 1966 construction application.
