Description

Located in northern Ohio along Lake Erie, 64 km (40 mi) west southwest of Cleveland; County Seat: Sandusky.

History

Established in 1838; named for the Erie Indians. "Erie" translates to "cat", "the nation of the cats" or "lake of the cats" and relates to the type of wildcat that roamed the area where the Erie Indians lived. (OH-T801/p276)
