Description
Located in northwestern North Carolina; 96 km (60 mi) west of Winston-Salem; County Seat: Wilkesboro.
History
Formed in 1778 from Surry County; named for John Wilkes (1727-1797), a British politician who favored American rights at the time of the Revolution. (NC-T11/p535)
