Located in north central North Carolina, 41 km (26 mi) north of Winston-Salem; County Seat: Danbury.
History
Formed in 1789 from Surry County; named for Captain John Stokes (1756-1790) who served in the Revolutionary War and later as a member of the House of Commons and the Convention of 1789. (NC-T11/p483)
