Description
Located in southwestern North Carolina along the boundary with South Carolina, 55 km (34 mi) southeast of Asheville; County Seat: Columbus.
History
Formed in 1855 from Rutherford and Henderson Counties; named for Colonel William Polk (1758-1843), a prominent officer in the Revolutionary War. (NC-T11/p390)
