Description

Located in eastern North Carolina, 137 km (85 mi) east of Raleigh; County Seat: Greenville.

History

Formed in 1760 from Beaufort County; named for William Pitt, Earl of Chatham (1708-1778), Secretary of State in England who helped plan the defeat of the French by British forces in America. (NC-T11/p13)
