Description

Located in western North Carolina, 82 km (51 mi) north northwest of Asheville; County Seat: Bakersville.

History

Formed in 1861 from Yancey, Wautauga, Burke and McDowell Counties; named for Elisha Mitchell (1793-1857), a University of North Carolina professor who died while exploring Mount Mitchell, also named for him. (NC-T11/p329)
