Located in western North Carolina, 40 km (25 mi) north of Asheville; County Seat: Marshall.
History
Formed in 1851 from Buncombe and Yancey Counties; named for James Madison (1751-1836), fourth President of the United States from 1809 to 1817. (NC-T11/p309)
