Located in northeastern North Carolina, along the boundary with Virginia; County Seat: Gatesville.
History
Formed in 1779, named for General Horatio Gates (1728-1806), who commanded forces which defeated British General John Burgoyne at Saratoga in October 1777 during the Revolutionary War. (NC-T11/p188)
