Description

Located in central North Carolina, 40 km (25 mi) southwest of Winston-Salem; County Seat: Mocksville.

History

Formed in 1836 from Rowan County; named in honor of William Richardson Davie (1756-1820), Revolutionary War hero, member of the Federal Convention of 1787, Governor of North Carolina, Minister to France and a founder of the University of North Carolina. Formed in 1855 from Edgecombe, Nash, Johnson, and Wayne Counties; named for Louis Dicken Wilson (1789-1847), Delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1835; he died as an officer in the Mexican American War.
