Description

Located in south central North Carolina, 72 km (45 mi) south southwest of Raleigh; County Seat: Fayetteville.

History

Formed in 1754 and named for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), second son of George II, who commanded troops at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 where Scottish Highlanders were defeated. (NC-T11/p130)
