Description
Located in northeastern North Carolina, 122 km (76 mi) northeast of Greenville; County Seat: Edenton.
History
Formed in 1668 as Shaftesbury Precinct of Albemarle County and named Chowan Precinct about 1681. Named for the Chowan River, which was named for the Chowan Indian Tribe. The word "chowan" may be derived from the Algonquin "sowan" or "south". (NC-T11/p106)
