Description
Located in eastern North Carolina, along the Pamlico Sound, 40 km (25 mi) east of Greenville; County Seat: Washington.
History
Formed in 1705 as Pamptecough Precinct; name was changed to Beaufort County approximately 1712 for Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort (1684-1714), who became one of the Lords Proprietors in 1709. (NC-T11/p32)
