Description
The highest peak in the Blue Ridge. Designated by UNESCO as an International Biosphere Reserve. The elevation has been surveyed by the North Carolina licensed PLS and confirmed by the North Carolina Geodetic Survey at 5946 ft within less than a foot (statewide lidar).
History
The original Cherokee name for the ridge was "Tanawha", which reportedly means "a fabulous hawk or eagle." The name Grandfather Mountain was given by pioneers who recognized the face of an old man in one of the cliffs.
