Description

Located in western North Carolina along the boundary with Tennessee, 109 km (68 mi) northeast of Asheville; County Seat: Newland.

History

Formed in 1911 from Mitchell, Watauga, and Caldwell Counties; named in honor of Colonel Waightstill Avery (1741-1821), Revolutionary War veteran and later Attorney General of North Carolina. (NC-T11/p17)
