Description
Located in northwestern North Carolina along the boundary with Tennesee and Virginia, 164 km (102 mi) northwest of Winston-Salem; County Seat: Jefferson. 427 square miles in size.
History
Formed in 1799 from Wilkes County and named for Samuel Ashe (1725-1813), Revolutionary patriot, judge, and Governor of North Carolina from 1795 to 1798. (NC-T11/p14)
