Located 6.4 km (4 mi) south of Palmyra in western New York State.
History
Joseph Smith came to this area in the early 1820s and claimed that this name and location came to him in a vision as the site where the gold plates, or the source of the Book of Mormon, were hidden. (George R Stewart, American Place-Names, 1970,pg 123)
