History
This feature is most commonly referenced as White Island, including on the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation website. In September 1976, a request was made to name the island Mau Mau Island, but the Board on Geographic Names ultimately decided in December 1976 not to take the name under consideration "...because name does not have any apparent local acceptance". This name was mistakenly added to GNIS in 2010; any other references in federal sources to Mau Mau Island come from sources published after 1976.
