History
Starting as a station established by the D&RGW Railroad in 1881, the move to incorporate as the Village of Española was made as early as 1920 and eventually became a city. Española (GNIS FID928729) is applied to the populated place west of the Rio Grande. The municipality has grown to incorporate nearby towns and villages with their distinct names.
