Description

Two arms, each approximately 64 km (40 mi) long, both extend from the SW end of Humboldt Sink; one, S to the Carson River and the other SW to the Truckee River; E arm is bounded on the E by the Carson River and the Carson Sink and on the W by the Hot Springs Mountains; SW arm is bounded on the SE by the Hot Springs Mountains and on the NW by the Trinity and Truckee Ranges

Named in the 1840's by emigrants traveling to California.
