Description
Located in eastern Nebraska, about 77 km (48 mi) west-northwest of Lincoln; County Seat: York.
History
At least two theories exist regarding the name origin of this County name: One is that the County was named for York, England by local resident Alfred D Jones. Another explanation is that a group of pioneer settlers from York County, Pennsylvania named it for their former homeland. Boundaries were established on 13 March 1855, and reestablished on 26 January 1856, by the State Legislature. (NE-T18/p146)
