Description

Located in northeastern Nebraska, 116 km (72 mi) northwest of Omaha; County Seat: Stanton.

History

Originally named Izard County for Mark W Izard, Governor of the Nebraska Territory from 1855-1857. The County was established on 26 January 1856 and redefined on 10 January 1872. The County name was changed to Stanton County in 1862 to honor Edwin M Stanton (1814-1869) who served as United States Secretary of War from 1862-1867. Its boundaries were defined by an act of the Legislature on 10 January 1862. (NE-T18/p137)
