Description

Howard County is located in the east-central portion of Nebraska and is bounded by Greeley County on the north, Merrick County on the east, Hall County on the south and Sherman County on the west. Saint Paul is the County Seat.

History

Howard County was named in honor of General Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909), a Union officer during the Civil War and Commander during the Indian Wars. Orgainized and delineated by an act of the Nebraska Legislature on 1 March 1871, and further organized on 28 March 1871. (NE-T801/p104)
