Description
Located in southwestern Nebraska, 64 km (40 mi) south-southwest of the community of North Platte; county seat: O'Neill.
History
Named in honor of Kentucky native Joseph Holt (1807-94), who served as Postmaster General and Secretary of War in President James Buchanan's cabinet (1857-1861). Buchanan later served as judge advocate of the U S Army under President Abraham Lincoln. Holt County was established by law on January 9, 1862.
