Description

Located in south central Nebraska along the boundary with Kansas, just south of Holdrege; County Seat: Alma.

History

Named for a nephew of Senator James Harlan of Iowa, who lived near Republican City, Nebraska and served as a revenue collector. Henry Gannet reports that the county was named for James Harlan, who served as Secretary of the Interior from 1865-1866. Harlan County was formed from a portion of Lincoln County and established on 3 June 1871. (NE-T18/p71)
