Description

Located in central Nebraska, 130 km (80 mi) N of Kearney. County Seat: Burwell.

History

Named for James Abram Garfield (1831-81), twentieth U.S. President in 1881. According to Nebraska Place Names (Perkey, 1995), Garfield County was formed from the western portion of Wheeler County by vote on November 18, 1881, but did not complete its initial organization until ordered to do so by the governor in 1884.
