Description

Located in northwestern Nebraska, 161 km (100 mi) N of North Platte. County Seat: Valentine.

History

Named in honor of Lieutenant Samuel A Cherry, 5th Cavalry, United States Army, who was killed in the line of duty on 11 May 1881 near Fort Niobrara. Cherry County was established on 23 Febrary 1883. (US-T131/1960/NE Placenames,p36)
