Description
210 miles long. Heads at the confluence of Two Medicine River and Cut Bank Creek 20 km (12.4 mi) N of the community of Valier, flows E through Lake Elwell, then SE to join the Missouri River 1.6 km (1 mi) SE of the community of Loma, 33 km (21 mi) downstream from Fort Benton.
History
Named for Maria Wood, cousin of Meriwether Lewis. A proposal to change the name Marias River to Maria River was submitted in Februrary 1998; in September 1999, the USBGN rejected the proposal based on the long-time local use of the current name.
