History

Named for Fred Hirschy (1884-1975), longtime area rancher who settled in the Big Hole Valley. A proposal to change the name to Sacajawea Mountain was submitted to the USBGN in July 2003. The Board voted instead to change the summit's name to Hirschy Mountain, citing concerns that the originally proposed name too closely resembled that of another geographic feature a short distance away and thus might cause confusion.
