History
A proposal to change the name of the lake from Joyce Lake to Ogimakwe Lake, a Chippewa word meaning "queen," was considered and rejected by the BGN in 1965. The name was changed in 2014 to Winterberry Lake, a name that refers to a species of holly native to the area.
