Description

Formed by damming the Swift River 4.8 mi NW of Ware; Towns of Ware, Belchertown, Pelham, New Salem, Hardwick, Petersham and Shutesbury. Winsor Dam is the primary dam for Quabbin Reservoir, Goodnough Dike is a secondary dam and Quabbin Spillway is an overflow dam next to Winsor Dam.

History

Means "many waters," (Douglas-Lithgow 1909) and also is the name of an Indian chief. In 1926 and 1927, the MA legislature provided for the establishment of a reservoir ultimately taking this territory. It was completed in 1940 (MGB 1932 Mermel 1963).
