History
The name "Alum" is derived from Allumps, Indian Sachem of Quinebaug, or Indian word meaning 'a dog' (Douglas-Lithgow, 1909); also supposedly derived from the taste of some rocks in the vicinity. Pookookapoug (from an Indian tribe) first used at the beginning of the twentieth century (Board on Geographic Names (BGN) 1907).
