Description

Located 12 mi S of Worcester (US-T121).

History

It was settled about 1704 and incorporated as a town in 1714. Name may have been given to the town by John Wampus, the Indian owner, when he sold it to the white men. A Dr. Sutton is said to have given Wampus medical treatment while the latter was returning from a voyage to England. Another theory is that the town took its name from Sutton, England (MA-T1/p45).
