Description
Located 6 mi W of Worcester (US-T121).
History
It was settled in 1713 and incorporated as a town in 1713. Possibly named for the Earl of Leicester (1680-1737), but may have been named for the English borough of the same name, the home of a number of the early settlers. It was an outgrowth of the common land called Towtaid, meaning 'an open field' (MA-T1/p26).
