Settled in 1705, incorporated as a town in 1786. Named for a famous Boston family, the Boylstons; two of whom, Zabdiel (1679-1766), first inoculator for smallpox in America, and Nicolas (1716-1771), were physicians. The latter founded the Chair of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard Universty (MA-T1/p10).
