History

Settled in 1714, incorporated as the town of Ward in 1778. Named Ward in honor of Artemus Ward (1727-1800) of Shrewsbury, first major general in the Colonial Army. Because postal officials were continually confused by the resemblences between Ward and Ware, the name of a neighboring town, it was renamed Auburn in 1837, for Auburn, England (MA-T1/p7).
