History

Name possibly derived from "pumpkin" as the island is supposed to be the "Round Island" granted to the Town of Weymouth in 1636-37; later called "Bomkin Island" or "Bomking Island" in the records of Samuel Ward in 1681-82, and "Pumpkin Island" by Nathaniel B Shurtleff in 1871 (Board on Geographic Names (BGN) files).
