Includes Muskeget, Tuckernuck and Nantucket Islands, SE of Muskeget Channel, in Nantucket Sound, 25 mi S of Cape Cod and 90 mi SE of Boston (US-T121).
History
Settled in 1641, incorporated as the town of Sherburn in 1687. Renamed Nantucket in 1795, from the Indian 'Nantituck,' 'the far-away land,' 'Nantuck,' 'sandy sterile soil,' or 'Nautican,' an Indian word for the island (MA-T1/p32).
