Description
Located 9 mi S of Carlisle (US-T121).
History
Settled about 1650, incorporated as a town in 1805. Probably named for one of the Earls of Carlisle, although it may have been named for the English hometown of James Adams, first white settler of the district, who was banished from England by Oliver Cromwell in 1640 (MA-TT1/p12).
