Located 12 mi E of Fitchburg; Middlesex County (US-T121).
History
Settled about 1668, incorporated as a town in 1871. Named for Dr. James Cook Ayer (1818-1878), a patent medicine manufacturer of Lowell, MA, who extended financial aid to the new town (MA-T1/p7).
