History
Settled in 1745, incorporated as a town in 1850, as a city in 1873. Named either for Elizur Holyoke who settled in Springfield, MA, in 1640 and became the son-in-law of the founder of that settlement, William Pynchon, or for Edward Holyoke, president of Harvard University (MA-T1/p24).
