Description
Located in Berkshire Hills, 22 mi NW of Springfield (US-T121).
History
Settled in 1760, incorporated as the town of Murrayfield in 1765. Named in honor of John Murray, an early settler. His Tory sympathies made the name objectionable during the Revolutionary War, and in 1783, the town was renamed Chester, for the English town of Chester (MA-T1/p13).
