Description

Located 14 mi SE of Greenfield (US-T121).

History

Settled 1735, incorporated as a town in 1761. Named for Samuel Shute, Governor of MA, 1716-1723, and uncle of the wife of Governor Bernard who was in office at the time of incorporation. Before 1761, it was in the plantation called Roadtown (MA-T1/p43).
