Description
Located in Berkshire Hills, 11 mi SW of Greenfield (US-T121).
History
Settled about 1743, incorporated as the town of Huntstown in 1736. Named Huntstown in honor of Ephraim Hunt, one of the first proprietors. Renamed Ashfield in 1765, probably because of the large quantities of ash timber in the vicinity, although the town may have been named for Lord Thurlow of Ashfield, England. However, the Thurlow barony was not created until 1778 (MA-T1/p6).
