Description
Located on Massachusetts Bay, 8 mi SW of Salem (US-T121).
History
Settled 1630, incorporated as a town in 1815. Took its name from the Indian word meaning 'wet' or 'overflown grassland,' which was a description of the area. Before 1815, it was part of Lynn, which until 1637 was also known as Saugus (MA-T1/p41).
