Description
Located on Massachusetts Bay 5 mi SW of Salem (US-T121).
History
Settled 1629, incorporated as the town of Saugus in 1631, as a city in 1850. Called Saugus from the Indian meaning 'wet' or 'overflown grass lands.' Renamed Lynn, in 1637, in honor of the Reverend William Whiting, first settled minister, who had been curate at Lynn Regis in England. From 1629-31 it was called the plantation of Saugus 1629 (MA-T1/p28).
